In the end, I took the phone off the hook.
Later that day, I needed to make a call myself. Once I was done, I put the handset back as usual. Almost immediately, the phone rang again; it was the same lot. I swiftly hung up again. The ringing persisted, so I decided to disconnect the line completely.
