From what I gather, these systems probably use some sort of automated programme that rings loads of numbers all at once. They only respond to the calls answered quickly and just leave the rest hanging. That's why you rarely get anyone on the other end when you answer. It's all about playing the odds. Honestly, there ought to be laws against doing this. Also, if you see a Manchester area code, don’t assume the call is actually coming from there. They might just have a dummy line there to bounce the call through.

Got a ring from this number, bloke speaking with a South African accent. He seemed to know my name, where I live, and even when I got my loft insulated. He went on about how the insulation I have might cause mould and damp, and said someone would be in touch to inspect it. When I asked which organisation he was from, he claimed it was some government department here in the UK. Not convinced one bit! From now on, I’m just gonna let it go straight to voicemail.

On 14th April around 9.30 in the morning I got a really quiet call, no one spoke. Then the very next day, at nearly the same time, the same number called again. A woman asked if I was the owner of the house, but I asked who it was first. She said something about loft services and asked again if I owned the place. I just told her no and hung up straight away.

Got a call just before 9.30am on the 14th April from a bloke with a strong foreign accent, sounded like he was in some hectic call centre. He started asking about my loft insulation and wanted me to answer loads of questions about when and how it was done. He asked for my name and if I owned the house. I told him if he was calling me, he should already know my name. He replied he wasn’t allowed to say. Then I asked what firm he worked for, and he said UK Energy. I just told him I wasn’t interested and hung up.
