Got a call from one of those auto-dialler machines that just couldn't deal with the answering machine going off. All I caught at the end was someone saying "goodbye". My lodger heard it and got worried I was being told off for unpaid tax or something. Told him the tax folks don't ring you up like that, they always send letters instead. Without a doubt, this was another dodgy scam call supposedly from the tax office trying to con someone out of their cash. The voicemail they left was awful, sounded like a right joke. The person on the phone couldn’t even give your proper tax reference or explain your tax code correctly. According to the rules, the tax department always has to send any updates about your tax in a written letter with full details - calling you out of the blue like this just isn’t how they do things.
