I recently received a rather dubious call from the number 0800 161 8181, with the caller purporting to be from a legal firm handling insurance claims for a car accident injury. I decided to feed them some fabricated information, which they seemed to accept without question. The chap identified himself as Drew Mason, claiming to be with a solicitors' firm, yet when I asked for a contact number or their office address, he was completely stumped and suggested I just 'Google it'. What a blatant scam!

Got a call from a woman sounding American claiming to be from Inland Revenue, which is obviously an old name, not HMRC. She kept saying it was urgent and super serious if I didn’t respond. I just ignored it because I know that’s not how HMRC usually operates. Definitely felt like a sketchy call.

I got a couple of missed calls from that number and, daft as I was, I rang back. Some Asian bloke answered saying it was the Inland Revenue, or something about the tax office. I quickly put the phone down - who wouldn’t? I’ve blocked the number now, no way I’m dealing with that again.

Got a call from someone claiming to be HMRC, saying I owed taxes and needed to give the name of my lawyer. They even threatened that they were going to come and arrest me! Absolute scam artists. I decided to play along for a bit just to see how far they’d go, but bailed as soon as money was mentioned. Watch out for these lot. They even had some poor lady ring me pretending to be from the police - told her to jog on straight away. Don’t fall for it, especially since they’ve managed to spoof the HMRC phone number somehow.

Got a dodgy call saying it was from HMRC, came from 01615138181. The voice sounded like one of those American robot messages, saying HMRC wanted to speak to my lawyer or they'd take legal steps. It told me not to ignore it and to ring the number they gave. Obviously a scam, so I sent an alert to HMRC by texting 60599 to report it.

It’s like they’re using a bunch of similar phone numbers just to bug people with identical messages. Pretty annoying when you answer and it’s always the same spiel from different extensions.

Someone rang me saying they were from the inland revenue and warned that if I or my lawyer didn’t ring them back, there’d be consequences!
