Got a voicemail telling me to ring HMRC. When I called back, some bloke asked for a reference number I didn’t know. Then he started reading out a statement saying it was being recorded, telling me not to interrupt. He claimed I was under investigation for tax fraud, owed more than £5000, and would be reported to the police and arrested. Total scam, obviously. I blocked the number straight away.

It's strange they bother texting in the first place instead of just calling directly. I reckon it's way more fun dealing with an actual person on the phone so you can mess them about a bit! This felt like some sort of American robot with a odd accent, and it didn't even say goodbye properly, just "take care." Proper weird, if you ask me.

So, around 12:37 on 7th August 2019, I got a voicemail saying I needed to ring back about some "HMRC investigation". I called the number, and they started telling me I’m under a “fraud investigation”. When I asked for a reference number or any proof so I could check with my accountant, they just cut the call. I just got a call from someone with an American accent saying I owed money for taxes from last year. I told them they must have the wrong person since I haven’t even been in the country for the past 18 months. This number is definitely a live scam operation, theyre on the phones full time, working hours like its a proper job, targeting older folks and conning them. They make loads of calls every single day. If enough people called back and disturbed them, it might slow them down. So ring them up and help muck up their scam!

Someone rang me saying they were from HMRC. When I asked if they were for real, they guided me through the real HMRC website to find some phone numbers. Afterwards, they called me back from 0345 300 3943. I was still unsure and mentioned that phone numbers can be faked on caller ID. Then they told me I should just wait for a court case and be ready to answer questions. To me, it sounds like a dodgy scam.

got a call from a woman with an indian accent, using a manchester area code, saying she was with hmrc. she asked for my name so i gave a bogus one. she then went on about how they’d already called me before, which i found quite funny. i told her straight up i didn’t trust the call and asked for more info about me. then she asked if i could get online, i said yes, and suddenly she just said bye and ended the call. definitely a scam, don’t fall for it!

Got a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC. When I called back, a guy called Steven Wright answered and told me I owed £4,300. He said I'd face consequences and needed to get a solicitor ready and wait for the police. I rang the real HMRC on 0300 200 3300 and turns out it was just a scam.

Got a call from some robotic voice saying it was US customs threatening legal trouble if I didn't ring back. They never said my name, which seemed odd. Surely, a proper government agency would send a letter through the post, not ring me on a mobile I never share. The whole tone was super pushy and aggressive. I reckon a legit government department wouldn't give a reason straight out or shout at you - they'd probably just ask for you politely. Feels like a scam to me, no doubt about it.
