Turns out it’s connected to a call centre in China. Weirdly, they had my old surname from before I got married, which I haven’t used in over a decade, so they must be working off outdated info. They claimed to be from some British outfit called FinaCapital, which doesn’t even have a website. When I told them that site doesn’t exist and they’re not actually based in the UK, they still insisted they wanted to chat about investments I’d done in the past. I said I wouldn’t share anything unless they gave me their company registration number, to which the caller seemed unsure but agreed to give it. The number started with “0888Z…” and I just laughed, since registration numbers don’t contain letters like that. I called him out for making it up and said he was clearly trying to scam me.
