Got a call today, picked up and could hear people chatting but no one actually talking to me - after a while a guy just said hello, I replied but then silence! I've been plagued by this particular number for the last few days, typically ringing during late mornings to early evenings. Interestingly, I've had a string of similar calls over the past year or thereabouts, all originating from Manchester's 0161 area code. Unfortunately, I didn't jot down any of those previous numbers. I’m quite baffled as to how they came by my number, seeing as I only share it with close family members. It feels rather unsettling to think my personal information might be exploited for marketing without my consent. I’ve made efforts to unearth the identity behind this number, which seems to be linked to a Government survey firm probing into utilities and telecoms. It certainly raises concerns about a potential violation of GDPR, and I reckon this company ought to be looked into.

This isnt some kind of national survey, its actually a company named Consumer Insight. The Office for National Statistics have confirmed they’re not involved at all and their fraud team is looking into it. The number has also been reported to Action Fraud, the UK’s 24/7 cyber crime reporting body, working alongside the Police.

They claimed it was a national survey, trying to make it sound like the official Office for National Statistics, which is a big government organisation. I told them it wasn’t a good time. I've decided to report the number to the real ONS because if it’s not them doing these calls, hopefully they’ll put a stop to someone pretending to be them.
