Got a call out of the blue from some scammer who’d clearly grabbed my number from a listing on sites like Gumtree or Ebay. They had my name but honestly knew nothing else about me. It’s nearly 2018 now, who still thinks cold-calling strangers is a good way to do business? Seriously, even scammers need to step up their game these days!

Got a call from some Indian guy talking about a car crash I supposedly had in the past three years. I told him I’m on a no-claims bonus for six years, so how’s that even possible? He claimed he was contacted by my insurer about some kind of payout. When I pressed him on which insurance firm, he suddenly said he couldn’t say because of data protection rules. Then he just ended the call. Strange.

Got a call from some guy claiming I needed to renew my insurance. I asked him what insurance he was on about since I don’t have any insurance at all. He insisted it was for my health. When I asked where he got my number, he said it came from my insurance provider, but I told him I don’t actually have one. He just kept repeating himself, so I told him to stop making stuff up and ended the call. Definitely sounds like a scam - best to ignore it.

Got a random call from someone saying they're a funeral planner nearby, then claimed to be ringing for some national federation. I said I’m on the TPS list, to which he said sorry. When I said he had to legally stop ringing TPS registered numbers, he snapped at me to "stop talking now". Proper cheeky!

Got a call out the blue about signing up for a funeral plan, which was a bit strange. When I told the woman I was only 28 and not looking to pop my clogs anytime soon, she replied that my voice sounded so deep I must be pushing 50! (Honestly, I think it’s just because I sing bass in a choir.) After that I had to give her a bit of a telling off before slamming the phone down. Feels like a dodgy sales trick if you ask me.

Then I asked for their VAT number, but they looked proper confused by that, which made me suspicious straight away. I ended the call pretty quick. By the way, always ask to see their VAT number since you can verify it online first.

On the 14th of November, about 1 in the afternoon, the phone rang and my wife picked it up. There was nothing but silence, and then the call just ended suddenly.

Interestingly, around 95% of these silent calls fail to leave any sort of message and often resurface a few months down the line. Yet, I still choose not to answer!
