Sounds like one of those hmre scams to me. Fishy behaviour for sure.

I’ve started turning the tables on these scammers by ringing them back and droning on about the weather for ages. I always hide my number using 141 before I call, then block them afterwards. It really makes you think about how terrified elderly or lonely folks must feel when they get these calls. The first time it happened to me, I was genuinely shaken. Big thanks to the ‘who called me’ service for helping me out!

Got a call that was dodgy and kinda threatening, so I hung up and then called HMRC using their official number. They already know about this scam going around.

got a call from a bloke speaking with a yankee accent claiming to be from inland revenue, saying it was urgent and i had to ring back. the message felt really intimidating. when i phoned back, the guy claimed to be from some investigation team but didn’t seem to know what for. i told him if it was serious they’d send a letter, then asked what he wanted. he tried to get my name but i refused and he just hung up. defo a scam - inland revenue never ring your mobile and make threats. if they call again, i’ll be taking it straight to the police.

This is definitely a fake HMRC call, make sure you report it directly to the genuine HMRC.

I just got a call from someone claiming to be Amanda Taylor from customs and excise, and she said there would be consequences if I didn’t comply. It was this weird robotic voice with an American accent - totally sounded fake to me.

Received a recorded message threatening dire consequences if I didn’t return the call. Definitely best to block this number!

Definitely a con, has nothing to do with making money, clearly.

Got a voicemail from someone that just said “don’t die” - guess I’m sticking around then!

Honestly, just ring them up. It’s a bit of a laugh and helps prevent people’s lives from getting messed up.

Everyone, do your part and resist these crooks. Just keep ringing their mobiles non-stop. They’ll probably swear and throw all sorts of insults at you, even get shockingly rude, but don’t stop ringing. It’s the only way to get them to quit.

I put hmre scam as the contact name so when they ring i just hang up immediately, dont want to waste time hearing their annoying voicemail or whatever rubbish they say.

Heads up everyone, this scam is still going strong today here in the UK. Don’t just sit there, keep calling them back. If they try to hide their number, just dial 141 before the phone number to show yours. We all gotta do our bit and push back, cause nobody else is gonna care.

It’s so frustrating dealing with these scammers, makes you feel powerless. But instead of just sighing and complaining, maybe try taking some action? These horrible people are just out to rob you, so staying quiet won’t help.
