Earlier today, we received a call from this number inquiring about a Mr Smith. We made it clear that they had the wrong number, as I'm definitely not Mr Smith, and then they promptly hung up. I've been receiving calls from a company promoting 'free government grants' for cavity wall insulation. They’ve had numerous missed calls on my end over the past week. I finally answered one today and let them know we’re not interested and requested they don't bother us again. I can completely sympathise with the frustration expressed regarding the number 0161 336 4400. It seems that this might not actually be a UK-based number at all. I've noticed that many folks across the country have received calls appearing to come from our own residential number (which also has the 0161 prefix). It appears this could be the doing of an offshore call centre, possibly located in India, utilising the Internet (VOIP) to reroute their calls to UK lines. The issue arises with the CLI system using 1471, as it only reveals the last 11 digits, making it look as if these calls originate from a genuine 0161 number, while the full number likely begins with 00161. I wholeheartedly believe that telecom companies ought to enhance their measures for monitoring, blocking, and penalising those businesses engaged in this sort of communication. It's a complete invasion of personal space!

Each time, we refused to disclose any information about ourselves, insisting instead on finding out who was on the other end of the line. They were rather evasive and wouldn’t reveal their identity, and the moment we pressed them further, they promptly hung up.
