I encountered a similar situation, but rather than "locking" my device, it merely froze the webpage I was viewing. I managed to resolve it by simply shutting down my browser. They can’t access any of your information unless you either enter the Microsoft username and password that appeared when I attempted to dismiss the pop-up, or if you ring their dodgy number. I've reported this to multiple agencies, as I fear that an elderly person might fall for it and comply with their demands. Just last year, I assisted an elderly neighbour who received a call from some scammers pretending to be from Microsoft. Thankfully, he struggled to hear them and brought the phone over for me to handle the conversation. Scoundrels!

It's truly disheartening to realise we've fallen prey to such vile individuals. If only I had stumbled across this information sooner; they locked me out of my computer, rendering me powerless to seek help! It’s infuriating to even think of them as anything but heartless fiends - I sincerely hope they get their just deserts. I’m keen to learn how things turned out in your situation since we’re currently anxiously awaiting news from our bank. It’s quite unsettling, to say the least. I had my suspicions and voiced my concerns over the phone, mentioning how cruel it would be if they were indeed fakes, especially since I’ve just finished my studies and am unemployed with no spare cash. They assured me they were trustworthy, even claiming they would recommend their services to family. It’s baffling - how could anyone trust such scoundrels who might very well turn on their own kin? The worry is just overwhelming.

So this bloke called saying there was some dodgy lot in my computer with 48,000 quid or something and wanted my bank info. I told him no way, twice actually. Then he just shut my laptop down and now it won’t turn back on properly. Anyone got any idea how I can get it working again? Really annoying!

Just like everyone else, my computer popped up a message telling me to ring Microsoft about some nasty spyware. Before I did anything, I looked it up on here and figured out it was a scam, so I didn’t bother calling.

I've had a run-in with some dodgy characters attempting to hijack my son's computer. Best to steer clear of their tricks!

I've just experienced the same thing myself, too!

So, this is just a trick where they claim your computer has a virus and that they work for Microsoft. They try to convince you to install some software on your PC, charging you to keep it safe from viruses. You'll see a message on your screen telling you to call them right away before you lose your files. Best thing to do is just shut down your computer and ignore it.

I've recently been on the hunt for some legal assistance to reclaim losses linked to this nuisance number, 01612419548. My computer was unlawfully locked, and I'm determined to get to the bottom of this. It seems this company operates by sabotaging internet connections to extort money, and based on the legal guidance I've received so far, it's clear that the individual behind this number is violating both UK and EU regulations. I've contacted Citizens Advice, and they mentioned they might provide information on local no win no fee options to pursue action. Additionally, I've lodged a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) regarding this matter. With the new legislation that took effect this week, the ICO is particularly keen on tackling such numbers, and hefty fines are expected to follow for these offenders.
