We've had three calls from this number so far. Strangely enough, they always seem to ring just when we’re away from the phone. Could this be a scam to increase their charges as soon as you try to call back? I reckon if you surveyed the public, a staggering 80-90% would jump at the chance for such a simple option. Why on earth haven’t the telecom companies jumped on this? It seems they’d rather keep the phone ringing incessantly, all in the name of making a quick buck. This number belongs to a business hired by charities to do fundraising calls. They aren’t scammers or anything dodgy, just working for firms contracted to handle this kind of work. Because of our gambling laws, they have to check if you’re over 16 since they usually promote lottery sign-ups. Try to be understanding - these people are earning a normal salary and it’s not an easy gig. It doesn’t hurt to politely but firmly say ‘no thanks’. Hope this clears things up :-)

To put an end to the pestering phone calls, it might be wise to turn the ringer on your phone down or even silence it completely. It's also a good idea to disable call screening and just rely on your answering machine. Oddly enough, it seems that if you sound youthful, they tend to lose interest.

I got a call from these so-called mcmillen cancer people today. They started talking about elderly cancer patients with no relatives and then asked for money immediately over the phone. I told them what a horrible and insensitive way to try and squeeze cash out of folks. I’ve reported them to the actual mcmillen cancer charity, and I really hope they get shut down for good.

I've had two calls in less than a week from these supposed charity fundraisers who, interestingly, have ties to the gambling world through their director Melvyn Hill, who's 71. Just yesterday, on a Sunday around noon, I was waiting for my kids to ring when this call came through. The moment I answered, they hung up straight away. The previous time I got a call from them, it was just a pre-recorded message telling me to press 2 for more details. Something about this firm seems off and worth a proper look. Their website even pretends to let you make complaints (really pointless) - I'd avoid it. They also try to look legitimate by linking to the Telephone Preference Service, but that doesn't actually help. I've reported both calls to the ICO, the official watchdog - you can do the same at www.ico.org!
