I decided to humour him for a bit and started bombarding him with questions about what exactly was supposedly compromised, how much money had vanished, and what items were purchased. Just as he began to answer, I purposefully cut him off and ended the call. He rang me right back, and that’s when I started feeding him a load of rubbish, throwing in a mix of fabricated details and generally leading him on until it finally clicked for him.
