As others have mentioned, I received a rather alarming call claiming I was facing court proceedings unless I pressed 1 to evade severe consequences, all supposedly linked to my national insurance. It was clearly an automated recording. As a person who runs several businesses, I’d ordinarily expect any correspondence, whether a letter or an email, rather than a phone call. So, without a doubt, this is a scam!

I just received a rather dubious phone call that claimed to be from HMRC, with an automated message warning me that I’m facing court action unless I contact them promptly. It instructed me to press 1 to speak with an agent, insisting I was being taken to court for tax evasion! I explained that I’m employed and don’t run a business to evade tax or anything of that sort. They then inquired whether I had recently obtained my National Insurance number, to which I replied I’ve had mine since I was 16. At that point, they unceremoniously hung up on me. How terribly odd! 🤷‍♀️
