I picked up the phone to a woman inquiring whether she was speaking to me! Naturally, I confirmed it was indeed me. When I probed about the purpose of her call, she claimed to be representing a debt collection agency, eager to discuss some outstanding payment that I allegedly owed. I could tell it was a scam right away, but I opted to play along, asking her how much I supposedly owed since I don’t really monitor my debts closely. She couldn’t provide an exact figure and when I pressed her about who I owed the money to, she went silent and abruptly terminated the call.
