After a short pause of around 5 seconds, a woman with an American accent began talking. She said she was calling from British Telecom and asked if I’d made any recent changes. When I replied by asking what kind of changes she meant, the call just cut off. Since I'm no longer a BT customer, it’s likely just some kind of scam.

Sounds like some dodgy insurance scam to me.
