It was a pre-recorded message claiming my IP address or computer had been hacked and urged me to get in touch with BT using the number provided on my keypad. However, I know for a fact that BT would never instruct someone in such a manner, particularly with a randomly generated number. They would instruct me to ring a registered contact number, not this nonsensical prompt. It simply doesn’t add up, especially considering BT isn’t even my service provider! The full telephone number displayed was 01485 146 299, which appears to be from the Hunstanton area in the UK. She rang about five days prior, claiming to be from BT, insisting that our Internet connection had been compromised and urging us to press different keys on our telephone. My husband has dealt with such calls in the past: they seem to enjoy targeting us around lunchtime. This is the second time I’ve picked up. The last time, the area code turned out to be bogus - surprised they haven’t blocked the number they're using. I don’t stick around long enough to find out their intentions. I suspect it's a pre-recorded message rather than an actual human being on the line. I usually turn to another website for checking these numbers, but it seems my ISP has restricted access to it - not entirely sure what’s going on there.
