The sender email was [email protected] but I couldn’t find any trace of that firm in our records and the name didn’t ring a bell even though it’s vaguely related to our field. I tried to reply to the email but it bounced back saying undeliverable. Later I spotted the real ‘reply to’ email was sneaky [email protected], so I was glad I hadn’t responded to that. The email had these contact numbers: Direct line 03333 407133, plus 01483 810799 Tel and 01483 810201 Fax. That’s how I stumbled across this thread. It's pretty hard for John Smith to sort anything out when a random person just says "Hi, I'm John Smith" and hands over a disposable number to ring back on. I’m not entirely sure about the mechanics of this trick, but I suppose the scammers want you to reply first.
