It was a callback about the Vodafone social tariff. Since I am deaf, I can’t pick up calls, which I made clear both online and when visiting the store. Despite that, they kept ringing me. Every time I missed the call, I had to submit my application again, and that happened three times. They insisted that calling was the only way to sign up for the Vodafone social tariff. Eventually, I gave up and switched to BT’s social tariff. It’s a bit pricier, but at least they recognise people who are deaf.

On the other hand, BT are way quicker, offering a very similar deal and you can check if you qualify in just a couple of minutes online. Sounds much better to me! Here’s their page:

So, I got calls two days in a row, and the first time I just blocked the number cause I didn’t recognise it. Figured if it was legit or important they’d send something official in writing with details like who they were and what company. The first call was late morning from Kingston upon Thames, Hull I think, and after looking into it, seemed dodgy and probably not legal. Then, on the same day at about 6.35pm, I got an international call from the US, but I can’t recall the full number, just remember something starting with +44 and 020. My phone’s set to block unknown or withheld numbers since I’ve had ID fraud issues before. Also, just before all these calls, I caught a weird alert supposedly from a YouTube member, but nothing showed up except 34 followers and my screen was covered with some STEF notification, blurry and with a greyish tint - I don’t usually allow stuff like that.

They claimed to be from Vodafone. Since I was actually switching my internet provider, I thought it might be genuine. However, she started asking for my bank info. There was loads of background noise too, like a busy train station or something. I mentioned that companies usually get you to enter your sort code and account number on your phone instead. She insisted they don't do it like that and I had to say the details aloud. I told her I couldn’t see my details right now and that I’d ring back later. But I never did - I just blocked the number straight away!

So, I found out about Vodafone’s discounted broadband for people on benefits from Money Saving Expert and decided to give it a go. You sign up online to show your interest, then they ring you back after a few days. If you happen to not pick up, I think they try calling up to five times, but if you miss all those calls, you might have to start the application all over. My whole process was done online. I reached out to them first through their website, ignored their first attempt since the number was unfamiliar, but after a bit of digging, I took the second call and everything went smoothly.
