Got a call from Barclays, some robot saying there was suspicious activity on my card. When I rang back, some bloke picked up and asked what the problem was. Told him they called me first, then he asked for my account info. Said I don't even have an account with them. He then got rude and kept accusing me of lying, so I just ended the call.

Somebody said they were from O2 and offered to lower my monthly charge but asked for the code that'd been texted to me. If O2 really were going to cut down my bill, I don't see why they'd need that code they supposedly just sent! Sounds a bit fishy to me!

Turns out these are scammers trying to get the 2fa code so they can mess with your account. Never ever give anyone the text codes you get, even if they say they’re O2 employees. Stay safe!

I have my phone set to automatically divert calls from numbers I don’t recognise straight to voicemail. It’s mad how rarely they bother to leave a message - especially the scammers. After that, I look them up on this site, block them, then clear the number from my recent calls. Pro tip: when you start using this feature, double check you’ve added your dentist, GP, and anyone else important to your contacts. If you accidentally miss someone, you can always ring back, speak to them, and then add them properly. It doesn’t take long before it all calms down.

I told them I appreciated the info but that I’d prefer to visit an O2 store to check it out myself. They kept trying to explain it over the phone, but when I pushed back, they just ended the call. I rang O2 directly afterward, and they told me they never call customers to offer deals or ask for personal details. Seems like a classic phishing attempt.
