Got a call from a TPS-registered number about renewing a warranty for a washing machine. I got a call from a guy with a really thick foreign accent, trying to talk to me like he knew my name. You could tell it was from some call centre because I heard a bunch of people chatting in the background. When I asked what he needed, he kept asking who I was. I just said I was the cleaner and hung up. Pretty clear it was a scam.

For sure a scam! The caller ID showed a local area code plus another district number, probably to trick folks. The woman was claiming I have boiler insurance, which is totally not true. I quickly told her no thanks and mentioned we're registered with the TPS. Ended the call before she could finish speaking.

My boiler check was overdue, or so they said. These scammers wanted my bank info to put a direct debit in place once more. The only way to realize they weren’t genuine is if you actually needed the service, but then you wouldn’t be able to contact them afterwards. Funny thing is, they rang at the exact moment a British Gas engineer showed up for our yearly inspection. When he tried to speak to them, they just ended the call.

I’ve never signed up for anything like that and definitely don’t require a help alarm at home. When I asked her where she’d gotten my details from, she abruptly ended the call. She did say the company she represented was called Home Help.
