This number rang me up saying they were from Lloyds Bank, asking about two payments close to £1000 and £400. They kept leaving messages trying to reach my mobile, but nothing ever showed up. After seeing the number a few times, I looked it up and called Lloyds myself. They told me it’s a common scam, so thankfully I didn’t hand over any cash.

This morning around 9 while I was driving, I got a recorded call pretending to be from the tax office. It said that either me or my lawyer needed to ring back straight away because there was some criminal case against me. I was instantly wary and didn’t bother calling them back - really happy I chose not to. Cheers for the heads up!

As loads are saying, this is just a scam. Some person called, said they were Claire Williams and started talking about police and arrests, asking for money. When I tried ringing them back to scare them off, the call wouldn’t even connect. Total rubbish, watch out!

On Thursday, 24th January 2019, at precisely 10:01 in the morning, I received a voicemail from a lady speaking in an American accent. Her message was quite urgent: "Please return our call. The matter we're dealing with is of the utmost urgency. This is Officer Claire Williams from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. You can reach my department directly on 01442 780173, that's 01442 780173. It's crucial that you don't ignore this message and get back to us as soon as possible. Failure to respond, or not hearing from your legal representative as well, will lead to legal repercussions. Farewell and take care."

Someone pretending to be HMRC kept ringing me, even sending texts and leaving voicemails. They really won’t give up easily. I’ve never had any dealings with HMRC, so it was obvious to me, but I reckon others might get caught out. Best thing is to just block the number and don’t pick up unless you’re certain it’s legit. If unsure, never answer random calls without checking first. The internet is great for looking up numbers, and websites like this one are a lifesaver for spotting scams.

I just got a phone call from someone saying they were from HMRC, but they sounded dodgy. The caller said they were in Hemel Hempstead and wanted me to pay up. I knew straight away it was a con since I have my own accountant handling stuff like that. I reported it to the police right away. My partner got a phone call saying he had an arrest warrant coming for tax evasion and that all his bank accounts would be frozen. They claimed we had to pay £3,000 into some holding account within two hours or else the consequences would follow. Obviously, it was pretty scary at first, but thankfully it didn’t take long to figure out it was a dodgy scam!

I called the number back, making sure to dial 141 first so they wouldn’t see my caller ID. A man with an Indian accent picked up, claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs. When I asked to speak to Clare Williams, he wanted my phone number before connecting me. I asked how I could be certain it was really HMRC and he just kept insisting I give my number first. I told him I wasn’t sure if it was a scam, and his response was to tell me to hang up - then he ended the call straight away. Pretty clear this was a scam.

Got a call on my husband’s phone around 11 in the morning. It was a recorded message, a woman’s voice claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs. She said it was urgent and that either we, or a solicitor, needed to ring back straight away or there’d be legal and money troubles. We’re pretty certain HMRC wouldn’t ever call like that, plus they don’t have my husband’s mobile number. Blocked the number and trashed the message. Really annoying and maybe even risky stuff.
