Got a call from someone unknown who said they were from our internet provider and threatened to cut off our service for some “illegal activity”. I rang up our actual ISP and turns out it wasn’t them at all.

this seems pretty risky especially if they get through to older folks and things. if someone falls for it, they might end up letting them access their pc and then wait for banking info to pop up or something. might even try locking your computer or something like that. i didn’t really go far with the call to see exactly what they were up to though.
