Got a call from Scottish Power about their smart meter. I don’t want one, they barely work right and can really mess up your bills, potentially leaving you with loads of debt (plus, I rent this place so it’s not even my decision!). They have no legal right to force it on you, despite what threats or hints they try to push, but honestly, they won’t stop harassing you. You’re NOT obliged to have one. The chap on the other end spoke impeccably, and he asked me to verify my name, then went ahead to provide my address and requested my date of birth to confirm my identity as the account holder. He explained that the purpose of the call was to set up a smart meter installation. Given that I've been inundated with emails about smart meters, I didn't think twice about it. However, he mentioned that the schedule was a bit tight (or perhaps that the slots were limited - I can’t quite remember why it seemed reasonable), so he promised a follow-up call on Friday to finalise the appointment. Fast forward to now, and I'm still waiting for that call. I’m left wondering whether this was a legitimate outreach or if I'm falling victim to a scam? I’m starting to lean towards the latter. I’ll keep this page updated in case it turns out to be on the level or, heaven forbid, if I end up getting scammed.

Got seven calls in just one week from an Indian woman claiming she was with Scottish Power about upgrading my smart meter. When I asked why the upgrade was necessary, she just said they'd ring back another time. After that, I contacted Scottish Power myself and they confirmed it was a scam. I received a call on the 6th of November 2023, but unfortunately, I missed it. This isn’t the first time, nor do I imagine it’ll be the last; these incessant calls from a multitude of random numbers began shortly after I had a little peek at purchasing a compact electric heater via an advert I spotted on YouTube. I didn’t end up going through with the purchase, but I did start to fill out an order form with my personal details - thankfully, I refrained from entering my card details. Even though I never completed the transaction, the seller bombarded me with emails shortly after. Now that the emails have ceased, I find myself inundated with calls from various numbers. My phone number is registered with the Telephone Preference Service, but it appears these callers are disregarding that completely, which leads me to suspect they are simply a bunch of scammers. I’ve resorted to blocking any numbers that I don’t recognise or that I’m not anticipating.

Just got a call from someone claiming they wanted to install a smart meter. When I told them I wasn’t interested, they said I was refusing to have the right equipment and asked for my details. I ended up hanging up... could’ve been anyone trying to record my voice and get more info. I wish I'd just cut the call earlier, had to be quite firm with saying no because they kept pushing and questioning me! You don’t need a smart meter to use electricity, but they insisted I didn’t have the proper gear and needed to note I was refusing like I was doing something wrong.
