I got in touch with Virgin about this number and a few others like it. They told me that the people calling aren’t doing anything illegal as long as they give a callback number. Virgin offer to block these numbers, but you have to pay £2.75 a month for the service (which is silly considering we already pay £19 a month just for the line). If the callers don’t leave any number at all, Virgin say there’s nothing they can or will do about it. Quite frustrating really.

However, I've discovered a rather effective solution for anyone grappling with these persistent nuisances: invest in a BT Call Blocker phone. Once you’ve blocked the number, they can ring to their heart's content, but they won't get a whiff of success! I only know which numbers have been harassing me because I maintain a log of all incoming calls, which allows me to flag the rogue numbers to the ICO. But here’s the million-pound question: do they actually take any action in response?

I've just had a call from an outfit calling themselves The Energy Council, and let me tell you, they put on quite the façade to seem legitimate.
