Just tell them your name's Ann or Barry, basically just wing it and see what sticks. Say it’s a fresh number you’ve only just got and you want to be taken off their list because you’ve got nothing to do with their company. Make sure to mention your rights loud and clear. Debt collectors have a job to do, but if you can stay sharp and sound confident when some stranger rings up (whether it’s some young lad, a uni student, or a bloke in his 50s who’s clearly working overtime to avoid life), you’ve got the upper hand. Once you convince them they’ve got the wrong person, they have to mark it down properly in their system, explaining why you’ve been taken off their call list. Job done! Peace and quiet at last, and onto the next loan shark you can spin a yarn to.

Today I got a call from this number, supposedly a debt collector from Sky. They wanted my address, but I told them I wasn’t going to share any details on the phone. After that, the caller got a bit cheeky and said I’d be receiving a letter instead. I just replied ‘fine, thanks’ and ended the call.

Sounds like these lot are working for some debt collectors or tracing agents hired by creditors to track down your phone number and home address. They probably want to get a court order sent through the post, rather than bothering you face to face, using their affidavit as proof that you're the person they're after and living where they reckon. If you’re daft enough to play along and hand over your details, you’re just helping them out. Best thing to do? Grab a whistle when you get the call and blow it right down the line - make them work for their money and maybe even pay to get your ears looked at after!

Can anyone tell me who this number belongs to? It used to call me every day at exactly the same time last year, just like someone else mentioned. This morning, my partner answered a call from this number, and the person on the line was asking for me. When I asked who they were, they just went quiet and ended the call. Shortly after, I received a text from my credit card company warning me about some attempted charges, both big and small, coming from the UK. PayPal marked those as suspicious and thankfully blocked the payments straight away.
