Honestly, calling back a number you don’t recognise is just asking for trouble. There’s so many dangers - it might be part of the wangiri scam or worse, you could end up chatting to an actual criminal. These scammers churn out millions of fake numbers, so it’s quite common that the one you ring back could be some poor unsuspecting person’s real number. The worst part? We Brits seem to be a prime target since many of us are either a bit clueless or too trusting, and hardly anyone makes the effort to report these dodgy calls.

Got a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft, said they were from their Reading branch and that my computer had problems. I told them nothing was wrong and I didn’t trust a word he said. Then he threatened to cancel my Microsoft licence and cut me off, so I just told him to do it as I knew it was a con. He ended up hanging up on me!
