I received a call from a gentleman with an Asian accent who asserted he was from Microsoft, stating that my Windows 7 computer was supposedly transmitting error messages. The catch? I don’t even own a Windows 7 machine! When I confronted him and pointed out that I recognised he was trying to pull a fast one, he abruptly ended the conversation.

On the 21st of May in 2013, just around 7:11 in the evening, I received a phone call that left me quite baffled. The individual on the other end appeared to have an accent reminiscent of someone from the Indian subcontinent, yet the number traced back to Peartree in Derby, which I found rather peculiar (thank goodness for The Phone Book Companion!). The caller didn’t seem to articulate very clearly and began to mention something concerning my computer, claiming to represent a company that sounded like "PC Technical". I quickly decided to cut the conversation short, as I simply couldn’t make head or tail of what they were on about.

Fraud Alert - Exercise Caution! I’ve just had an encounter with a bunch who purport to be calling for “security awareness.” They’ll try to convince you that your computer might be at risk and will urge you to delve into various sections of your operating system. Their aim is to get you to alter settings, ultimately attempting to gain access or perhaps even install some nasty virus or malware. Stay vigilant!

I just let a call slip through my fingers. The voicemail only contained a few seconds of background chatter from the office - what a letdown! I've been quite eager for one of those con artists to reach out; I’ve got a few choice words lined up for them!
