We received a similar phone call today, the 22nd of September in 2017. The bloke introduced himself as James from the Microsoft campus in Reading. He had quite an Asian accent. To put it plainly, he was rather impolite and confrontational when I pressed him for his identification details, especially after I declined to proceed with the conversation. Just a word of caution - steer clear of providing any personal information!

I recently received a dodgy call from a con artist claiming to be from Microsoft using the number 0131 618 566. The individual, who identified himself as 'Daniel', tried to persuade me that my computer was at risk of being hacked. When I expressed my doubts and suggested verifying his claims, he conveniently provided me with this number to reach him back. He insisted that he was calling from Microsoft’s office in Reading but intriguingly gave me an Edinburgh contact number. Curious, I checked Microsoft’s official security guidelines and found this statement: "Please be aware that Microsoft will never contact you uninvited regarding PC support or any technical issues. Any legitimate communication must come from you initiating it first." Interestingly, earlier that day, I had a different call from a woman who clearly wasn’t as adept. I peppered her with questions, and when I pressed her for her employer, a chap in the background said "Apple" in a hushed tone, to which she snapped, "Shut up!" before abruptly disconnecting. I didn’t think it necessary to dial 1471, so I can’t confirm if these were linked to the same dodgy lot that subsequently pretended to be from 'Microsoft'.

I got a random call from someone saying he was ‘Daniel’ from Microsoft, using the number 0131 618 566. He claimed my computer was at risk of being hacked and sounded really convincing. When I said I felt a bit iffy and wanted to double-check, he told me to ring back on that Edinburgh number. He claimed he was calling from the Microsoft office in Reading though, which didn’t add up. So I looked at Microsoft’s security advice and found this bit:

“Microsoft will never call you out of the blue offering PC or tech support. We only ever get in touch if you start the contact.”

Earlier that day, I’d had a similar call but from a woman who wasn’t very sharp. I asked her loads of questions and when I queried which company she worked for, a man in the background whispered "Apple" and she snapped “Shut up!” before hanging up. Didn’t bother checking the number with 1471, so no clue if it was the same scammers giving me the runaround twice.

I took the precaution of checking Microsoft’s official security resources, which clearly state: "Please remember, Microsoft will never contact you out of the blue to offer unsolicited technical assistance. All communications should begin with you." Interestingly, prior to Daniel’s call, I had a similar encounter with a woman who clearly wasn’t as crafty. I peppered her with questions, and when I pressed for her employer, a male voice at her end whispered, "Apple." She snapped back, "Shut up!", and the call abruptly ended. I didn’t bother ringing 1471, so I can’t confirm if it was the same crew that later reached out to me pretending to be from Microsoft.
