My dad had a very similar encounter a couple of days ago and then again today. They come across as rather aggressive and definitely not trustworthy, in our opinion.

I’m writing from South Africa and got a call from number 00180025111. The caller said his name was JOHN SMITH and claimed to be working for Microsoft in the middle of the US. He told me my computer had been hacked and asked to take control so he could fix the issues and keep it protected. Since I’d been having issues with my PC running really slow, I believed him. He said it would take about 3 to 4 hours to sort everything out. Then, he requested my credit card details, offering a 7-year protection plan. Trusting him, I shared my info, and nearly 3,600 ZAR was taken from my account. After that, my computer acted even more strangely, so I got in touch with Microsoft directly. The scammers sent a report supposedly for customers, which I kept to pass on to Microsoft and my bank for investigation. They kept calling me from that same 00180025111 number, but stopped once I told them I’d reported them. On the report, numbers 01315100072 and 9524676390 are listed.

Today I got a phone call from this number, they said they were from Windows support and that there was an issue with my computer. They tried to get me to download some Ammyy software, which looked like a way for them to control my PC. I wasn't having any of it, so I asked for their contact number and said I’d ring them back - but obviously, I’m not planning to call at all.

Received a call from a scammer claiming my name is X from directory services. How are these people managing to find out personal details like my name?

This number keeps ringing me, and when I asked who they were, they said they were from Microsoft and gave me a number 013151100072 along with an address on Cardinal Street, Victoria Place, London. But after a bit of digging, I discovered it’s actually just a shopping mall, not some office. Definitely feels like a scam to me.
