Received a dodgy call purporting to be from O2. Absolutely not legit. I've gone ahead and blocked the number.

Got a ring from 01146975911, same old story about upgrading my phone plan. Classic scam attempt, as usual.

As soon as I pick up the phone, it just hangs up instantly - sounds like one of those automated dialler things.

The chap on the other end wanted to know what kind of device I own, but if he's truly from Sky Mobile, he ought to already have that information since it’s a Sky product! As soon as I began to ask a few questions, he seemed to get a bit flustered and hung up on me. Quite dodgy, if you ask me!

It escalated to them providing a dodgy Extension ID and Department Number after I expressed hesitance to divulge my personal information without verifying their identity. When I still refused, they seemed rather put out. I decided to reach out to O2 directly via the My O2 app, and they set the record straight. Turns out, it was all a ruse. They stated emphatically, "There is no current promotion running that grants such a discount to any of our customers. We’ve had an influx of reports regarding scammers targeting O2 users with outlandish offers such as 40% off line rental, bargains on handsets, and even free gifts like smartwatches. These scammers often claim to represent O2 or act on our behalf. They dangle fake discounts and giveaways. Some take an alarming amount of personal information necessary for new applications, including banking and payment details, while others might mess about with your existing My O2 account, stealing login info and attempting to acquire one-time codes (OTACs) to carry out dodgy upgrades. Ultimately, they may even end up ordering 'incorrect' devices to your residence. Let me be absolutely clear: this is a fraudulent call. Always keep in mind that if you receive a call from someone claiming to be O2, we will never request one-time passcodes, passwords, PINs, or intimate personal information such as bank details."
