When I picked up the call, there was complete silence on the other end.

I wouldn't place any faith in this bloke; he's definitely up to no good, no doubt about it! He claimed to be from Virgin Media's tech support, reaching out regarding some problems I mentioned with my broadband. His accent was distinctly foreign, which raised my suspicions immediately.
