I spoke to someone at BT who explained that scammers abroad actually purchase chunks of UK numbers, which is why the numbers they call from keep changing. Blocking them seems a bit useless, though I keep doing it anyway. Nowadays, I just have my answerphone on all the time and only answer if I recognise the number.
