7 yearsI received a rather dubious call from a foreign call centre masquerading as the UK Telephone Preference Service. They contacted my office line, launching straight into an inquiry about whether I've been troubled by unwanted calls. Despite my firm 'no', the caller continued, eager to tout some 'new TPS scheme' that supposedly promises to eliminate all nuisance calls. To make matters stranger, she misaddressed me, using my late mother's first name, which sent a chill down my spine since she passed away a decade ago. When I pointed out that the person they were attempting to talk to was deceased, she utterly disregarded my comment and ploughed on with her sales pitch. I promptly hung up and blocked the number. A quick look at the TPS website confirmed that there are indeed numerous scams targeting people, trying to charge for what has always been a free service.
