Called about a washing machine I don't want, and I instantly knew it was a con - my neighbour had just had the very same call. I told the caller my daughter sorts out my money matters since she’s a solicitor, and he suddenly wanted to end the call. When I asked for a number she could ring back on, he fumbled and gave me 0800 688 9090, which didn’t match the number on my caller ID, 01273 025126. These muppets will try anything to scam you.

Got a call saying the warranty for my HOTPOINT had expired. I had to ask him three times, “Which one exactly?” and he just went with “HOTPOINT.” Seriously, I’m not even sure which is which - washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher? Honestly, it doesn’t matter, all my appliances are insured through a major company anyway.

I answered the phone and heard a recorded message saying something about “allsorted cover” or similar, then it mentioned all the operators were busy but they’d call back soon. Pretty clear they’re using some kind of auto dialler system. Anyway, I’ve just blocked the number now.
