I just got the same message loads of others are getting, same email address and everything, all from some Spock about a graphics card using that same cancer story. They even asked me for my bank info too.

I've encountered a similar issue! I was reached out to via [email protected] regarding a transaction on Shpock. They've now got hold of my email, PayPal details, and home address.

I've just dipped my toes into the world of advertising for the first time, and I had an interaction with someone named joycole99. Regrettably, I handed over my details without thinking. How serious is the threat of a scam in this situation? I've gone ahead and shut down my PayPal account, but now they possess my name, email, and address. Feeling anxious about it all. 😟

Cheers to those anonymous good Samaritans! It's quite amusing that I received an identical request for my PayPal details from someone named Joy Cole. Looks like it's time to hit that block button!

This afternoon, I found myself in a remarkably similar situation. Thankfully, I decided to search the name and email online. What a relief! It’s undoubtedly suspect and should be steered clear of!

I got an email from this individual claiming they were purchasing something for their cousin, mentioning they had some disabilities and were hard of hearing, or similar. They proposed to handle the payment through PayPal and even suggested sending a courier to pick it up. I made it clear right away that it wasn’t happening.

I've shot an email over to [email protected] and I'm just biding my time to see if they fancy purchasing my item on Shpock. Honestly, I’m not holding my breath 😠 as I find myself scrolling through the remarks here. Anyway, I suppose it's time to relist it!

Well, it seems I’ve had a rather similar experience with the very same individual through Shpock. The amusing part is that I’ve been stringing them along, assuring them I’m perfectly fine for the transaction to proceed. I mentioned I’d be out for the majority of the day and would sort out the PayPal particulars upon my return. 🤭 So, all day long, they’re likely believing they’ve found an easy target! I’ve just sent them a cheeky email asking what details they required, as I’ve completely forgotten. Now, I'm just waiting for their response, after which I’ll hit them with a rather delightful photo to chew on! 😂😂

I've recently encountered a similar situation on Shpock. It mentioned that we were in completely different locations, which immediately raised my suspicions. They provided the email [email protected]. I'm grateful to everyone for their input; I've gone ahead and reported this to Shpock.

I recently received a rather dodgy email from [email protected] in response to an advertisement I had posted on Shpock for a chair I’m looking to sell. The message said something along the lines of, "That’s absolutely splendid, consider it sold! Please disregard any other inquiries as I’m happy to pay your full asking price. It’s a gift for my cousin, and I’m quite pleased with the ad. Unfortunately, due to my hearing impairment and being confined to a wheelchair, I won’t be able to collect it myself. However, I have a courier who can pick it up from you once I’ve sent the payment via PayPal. Could you let me know the collection details now so I can inform the courier?" Feeling cautious, I’m grateful I stumbled upon this thread and promptly decided to pull the plug on the deal!

I received a text from the number +441252236326 about an item I had listed on Gumtree. The message instructed me to reach out to the buyer at [email protected]. I haven't attempted to respond to the message and won’t be emailing them either, as I’m well aware of the risks involved. Just thought I’d share this here to warn others. Be cautious!

+441252236326 sent me a message about my Gumtree listing asking "Is that music gear still available? Please reply to [email protected][###]". Count me in! I received an email from [email protected] just moments after I listed my sofa for sale. Oddly enough, Gumtree’s stats showed that there hadn't been any views on my ad. This number is definitely a scam. I’ve come across it again while replying to an ad on GUM TREE. Like many others, I decided to do a bit of digging myself, and I really appreciate the insights everyone shared.

Out of the blue, I received a message from this number a mere ten minutes after I uploaded my ad on Gumtree. It felt far too instantaneous, and I couldn’t shake off my doubts! They insisted I reach out via email to discuss purchasing the item, using the address [email protected]. Naturally, I wasn’t about to fall for that! Giving out my email address on Gumtree? Not a chance!

This individual has also popped up on the Liverpool Gumtree page. Their emails really give off scam vibes. They’re super persistent and a bit too pushy. When I told them I didn’t use PayPal but offered to show the bed I was selling and suggested a bank transfer if they were interested, they suddenly went quiet.

I had an encounter with someone claiming to be Joy Cole who supposedly sought after a rather costly item on Gumtree. Turns out, it was nothing more than an elaborate ruse to obtain my PayPal information. She had the cheek to say she was in a wheelchair and had some hearing difficulties. It’s clearly a scam. Watch out for the email [email protected]!

Had a very similar experience like the previous comment! Someone called called Anita Cole about a sofa I put up for sale. She said she couldn't pick it up personally and would arrange for a courier to do it, and that she'd pay through PayPal. Then she mentioned transferring the total amount including courier fees so I could pass it on to the courier. It all felt a bit dodgy. Wish I'd looked it up earlier! Blocked her now and will be more careful next time.

I had an eerily similar encounter. This woman attempted to persuade me to wire a courier £200, convincing me that she’d sent the money via PayPal. She insisted that she couldn’t pop into a bank to manage the transfer herself as she’s both deaf and has a disability. Fortunately, I decided to investigate her number, and lo and behold, no payment had arrived through PayPal. What a con artist!

Anita Cole chiming in on a Gumtree listing today - "Fantastic! Let’s consider this deal done; please go ahead and scrap all other viewings as I’m ready to meet your full asking price. I wish to purchase it as a gift for my cousin, and I’m quite content with the details laid out in your ad. Unfortunately, I'm unable to collect it in person due to my hearing impairment and use of a wheelchair. However, I have a courier service that can handle the pick-up from your designated spot once you’ve received the payment. I'll be sending the money through PayPal. Could you please let me know where the collection point is, so I can relay the information to my courier straightaway?"

What a terrible, cruel person asking me to buy two prams, then spouting that rubbish about cancer - completely disgusting, especially when my little one is only a year old and battling cancer. I told her I’ll track her down and she’d better start making funeral arrangements. Thankfully, I’m sharp and always double-check things, nothing goes through my selling account without me knowing. Karma’s a right pain and it’ll catch up with her for sure.

Got a message from a woman named Beatrice saying she wanted to buy my sofa. She claimed she had throat cancer and couldn’t leave her house, so she’d send someone to pick it up. Then she mentioned there was an issue with the payment and that the collector needed paying upfront. Mrs Rosalie Daniel. ([email protected]) COMPLETE SCAMMER! I put up an ad on Gumtree and she emailed me saying she can’t pick up the item because she’s away at some camp. Claimed she can’t use online banking, yet somehow she’s using PayPal?! Said she’d send someone else to collect it for her. Stay well clear of her!

Blimey, Marie Bancroft seems to be quite busy. I had the exact same thing happen after putting a pram up for sale on Gumtree. She apparently has throat cancer and claims she can’t pay with cash, so she wants me to create a PayPal account for her.

Guess who rang up Kate Gregory? Still on the hunt for a wedding dress. Not very kind at all.

Kate Gregory [email protected][###] tried to con me on Gumtree, saying she wanted to buy my wedding gown. I'm still recovering from open heart surgery, deaf and stuck at home, so she suggested sending a courier to pick it up ?? She sent the most obvious fake PayPal email ever and asked for payment through Western Union. I've reported it to PayPal and the cyber fraud team.

Got a call from +14158548937 claiming to be “Kate Gregory” with the email [email protected][###]. Same old scam stories about being deaf, heart issues, courier troubles, and PayPal scams. Do not bother calling back or replying to the email. Just dodgy folk trying to trick you. Stay safe!

So this Marie Bancroft person reached out about cancer and wanted me to reply through email: [email protected][###] asking for my PayPal details but quoted a different amount to what I'd asked for. After hearing the cancer story, I realised it was a scam. Fingers crossed my PC didn’t catch any viruses from replying!

I got an email from [email protected][###] sayin they wanted stuff I was selling on Gumtree. It felt a bit dodgy right away so I googled the email and found this site, lucky me. I replied sayin you’re a scammer, leave me alone haha.

Got a text from this number claiming to be Mr Wayne, asking me to reach out to his wife Louisa Wayne at some gmail address. I naively replied and then got some story about him having throat cancer and needing payment through PayPal with an agent coming to collect. Felt fishy so I looked up the number and all these warnings popped up. TOTAL SCAM, STAY CLEAR!!

This person looks like they target folks trying to sell stuff on sites like Gumtree or Ebay. Definitely a scammer.

Kate Gregory asked me to share my PayPal info and email her at [email protected][###] which seemed really sketchy and odd. I'm so relieved to find this all documented here!

This caller is just like all the others but they've sent me a message. It said, "Hi, this is Mrs Beawall, is the sofa still up for sale? Please contact my partner at [email protected][###]" Cheers for flagging this. It's pretty disgraceful. Christina

This woman calling herself Marie Bancroft contacted me on my mobile, number 071252236326, and via email at [email protected][###], about a pram I had listed on Gumtree. She claimed she was suffering from throat cancer and promised to send someone to pick it up once the PayPal payment cleared. Thankfully, my partner had a gut feeling something was off and stopped the deal just in time! Be careful with this one!!!

Got a message from someone on Gumtree pretending to wanna buy my stuff. They said they'd organise a courier to pick it up and pay through PayPal. Said they couldn't come over themselves cause they're deaf and stuck at home recovering from heart surgery. Good thing I looked them up here first, felt like a scam.

Marie Bancroft - classic scam really. I’ve reported it to both my bank’s fraud department and PayPal, plus added more security to my PayPal account. What a bunch of scummy ppl! Pretending to have throat cancer, then trying to get my home address and PayPal info. Total rubbish!

Sc@m! Replied to my Gumtree advert. Claiming to be in a wheelchair and deaf. Asked me to contact a Melissa Hogan through Gmail ([email protected]). Wanted to send money through PayPal and organise a courier. You can guess what happened next, ‘problems with PayPal, can you give me your bank details?’ - all dodgy stuff! Keep clear of this scammer!

Watch out for a Gumtree con!!! Someone called Kate Gregory gets in touch, telling you to remove your ad because they’ve supposedly sold the item. She offers more money than your asking price. Don’t trust the first text from this number - she’ll ask you to email her. Seems really suspicious right from the start!

Got the same thing from Melissa, she wants to buy my sofa, says it's a present for her cousin. Says she can’t come see it cause she’s disabled. Kinda felt dodgy so I looked it up and loads of people had had the same story. I guess next she’d say there’s an issue with PayPal and ask for my bank info to send money. I’ve blocked her number and marked her email as spam now.

WATCH OUT, total tw#t messaged me about my sofa I put up on Gumtree, saying she loved it and wanted to buy it as a present for her cousin. Claimed I could consider it sold straight away and she’d organise a courier once I gave her my address and PayPal info. She also said she couldn’t come herself because she was in a wheelchair and couldn’t hear properly.

I got a message from someone saying their name was Melissa Hogan - email was something like [email protected][###]. They said they really liked the item and would pay the full amount but can’t pick it up themselves because they’re housebound, use a wheelchair, and hard of hearing. They said they’d pay through PayPal and send a courier to collect it.

had the exact same thing from a Mrs Ellie using the same phone number, on Gumtree, talking about throat cancer and asking for a PayPal address and all that. I’m guessing they pay for the stuff, pick it up, then claim with PayPal they never got it, which PayPal always sides with the buyer on and gives a refund. And just like that, scam complete. Seller ends up losing out big time.

Got two texts today from this number, asking about buying my nursery stuff off Gumtree. Same old story about having throat cancer and not being able to speak. They even said they've sent me money and wanted me to visit Western Union to cover courier costs since they can’t leave the house.

Got an email asking about some furniture I was selling on Gumtree. I replied with a way over the top price compared to what I actually asked and they said it was a good deal, then went on about some cancer stuff, which was really low since I lost my own brother to throat cancer. Honestly, what a total jerk for bringing that up. Hope they get what’s coming to them!!!

Got a message from someone called Kate Gregory, saying she was happy to pay the full price if I agreed to the offer. She claimed she'd had heart surgery and lost her hearing, and said she'd send a courier to pick up the wedding dress. When I said no, she pretty much begged me to do it via PayPal. Total scam alert!!!

Got a message from a bloke called Michael Elliot on my phone after I put an item on Gumtree. Next thing, I get emails from him saying he’ll pay full price but can’t talk because he’s got throat cancer, and that his agent would come to pick the stuff up. He claimed he’d sent payment through Paypal, but then asked me to send some of that money off to a US address using Western Union. I’ve told ‘Michael’ I know it’s a scam. Luckily, no cash changed hands and the Paypal email looked dodgy as hell. Watch out, this isn’t legit!
