There’s this number that pops up on my dad’s phone bill now and then - it’s actually from the 'Lifeline' service. Basically, it’s for folks who wear those emergency alert wristbands or necklaces designed to get help if they fall or suddenly feel unwell when they’re alone. Since my dad has dementia, sometimes he accidentally triggers it without realising. Honestly, the cost on the bill is nothing compared to the安心 it gives us knowing help is just a button away.

Sometimes there’s a button on the front door too, to warn about unwanted visitors. Occasionally, the wrist device might accidentally trigger a false alert if it gets bumped. Every alert, real or accidental, gets responded to, and right now, it costs 15p each time.

I just got in touch with BT about these calls from this number on my line, and they kept saying it was me who was making them. Honestly, trying to get help from them felt totally pointless, like shouting into the void.
