That pause you get when you pick up, before anyone actually speaks, is probably cause they’re using one of those auto dialling systems. Once it realises someone’s picked up, it passes the call on to an operator who’s likely hanging about with a bunch of other operators, all waiting for a “real” person to be connected by the auto dialler. Dunno if it’s against the law in the UK, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the US. I’ve saved the number as "Hmupty Dumpty says f##k u" and I avoid picking it up at all costs now.

Got a call from this number but didn’t pick up since I didn’t know who it was. I usually ignore any number I don’t recognise, they’re just a hassle.
