I put up an ad on Gumtree and included my phone number, thinking nothing of it. Almost immediately, I received a call from this annoying scammer trying to persuade me to fabricate a story about a car accident. For crying out loud! The number turned out to be linked to a group of chancers from abroad, and it doesn’t even resemble a proper UK number. It seems they troll Gumtree, ready to pounce on any new listings where folks have carelessly shared their contact details.
