I received a phone call the other day from someone claiming to be contacting us for our manager on behalf of the government. When I mentioned that the manager was unavailable, the caller's tone definitely soured. I simply asked if he could provide me with a name and a direct contact number so I might inform our manager to get in touch if it was truly urgent. To my surprise, he refused, insisting that he could not share any direct line as he was merely representing the government. He then mentioned he’d try again another day, which frankly seems quite far-fetched. Curious, I decided to ring the number back only to be met with an automated response stating it was BMG Research, assuring me they would reach out again within a few days. That’s going to be a bit tricky for them, considering I’ve blocked their number! I can’t stress enough - be cautious about disclosing any information to such companies that fabricate rules and attempt to present themselves as more official than they truly are.

He actually said our company’s name exactly how it’s on Companies House, which is unusual for them. He wanted to talk to the person who handles training. The woman calling seemed honest about why she was ringing. I answered her questions about how businesses had been doing during the pandemic. However, the line was so crackly and filled with interference that I decided to cut the conversation short. To top it off, my phone has marked it as a potential spam call.

She wanted to talk to the manager, but when I told her they weren’t around, she just carried on talking to me instead. She asked loads of questions and read some sort of disclaimer. Then, before she could say more about sharing my info, I just ended the call. No thanks!

Got a call from a woman with an Indian accent, she said it was some sort of government survey. She sounded pretty pushy and quite rude, like I had no choice but to pay attention. I’m not a fan of that kind of tone, so I just brushed her off.

The call ended up going straight to my voicemail since I'd blocked the number, thinking it was a scam. When I checked, the message was from a guy with a Scottish accent who swore loud and clear - something like "for f@@@'@ sake." Doesn't sound like a proper official call to me at all!

Got a call from someone claiming to be with a government agency, sounded like he had a heavy Scottish accent. Wanted to know the name of our Director, but I didn’t give anything away. He was clearly fishing for info, but no luck on his end. I’ve gone ahead and blocked the number on our system now. It definitely felt like a call centre - the line got all echoey whenever I spoke.

A person from what sounded like an overloaded call centre rang me claiming they were from a "Government Office." They didn’t give their own name and spoke quite fast, making it a bit hard to catch everything. They asked for some information and wanted to talk to our MD. When I mentioned we weren’t interested and that any genuine government contact would come straight to us without fuss, they kept insisting it was a government call and insisted it wasn’t a sales pitch. I just wished them luck and ended the call.

Got a call from someone saying they were from the education department for the government, asking to talk to 'staff'. I just ended the call straight away.

Someone called me saying they were Nina from BEIS doing some kind of government survey and wanted to speak to a director by name. Since we're a voluntary group, the senior people rarely come into the office. When I asked if I could have a number to ring back on, she said there wasn’t one available!!!
