So this number rang me on the morning of Tuesday, 09/03/2021. A woman who said her name was Mary called, claiming to be from “WINDOWS.” She told me my email address (which she actually got right) was apparently being used to send out scam emails, likely by some fraudsters. I got pretty annoyed straight away and told her I didn’t trust her or believe she was really with “Windows” - I figured she meant Microsoft or something similar. I said “I get calls like this constantly” and hung up quite sharply, then blocked the number on my phone. But afterwards, I kept thinking about how softly spoken and polite “Mary” sounded, and wondered if I’d been too quick to cut her off. When I looked up the number online, there was no info about who was behind it, so that confirmed to me I was right to be suspicious in the first place. Maybe I could have been a bit kinder and listened more, then blocked it afterwards. But honestly, if everyone took these calls seriously and gave in, loads more people, especially the elderly or vulnerable, would be tricked. I really wouldn’t advise anyone to trust these types. They’re deceptively smooth and dangerous, probably working for some higher-up criminals who exploit people who aren’t savvy enough to spot the scam. I’ve actually been conned before, and I still don’t think I’m clever enough to avoid all this stuff.
