So this bloke rang me up and after a few questions, I asked him how he’d managed to get my number since I’m unlisted. Asked him the same thing again and then he just cut me off!

I received an automated call purporting to be from Telepro Marketing, discussing medical pendants, while another number, 01208 227337, supposedly linked to the same outfit, was pitching will writing and funeral package services. Curiously, numbers 01208 227335, 01208 227336, and 01208 227340 just produced a message indicating that the call couldn't be connected. They also seemed to be calling from the range of 01302 492730 to 01302 492733, with a focus on driveways. Oddly, the numbers just preceding and following this range also echoed the 'service cannot be connected' message, leading me to suspect a possible scam or dubious activity. Exercise caution when dealing with these calls!

Just like others have said before, got a call from some bloke claiming to be John from a medical alerts company. He started with "Can I just ask if you’re over 50?" Immediately sounded dodgy to me. Total scam, seriously, don’t waste your time - just hang up straight away!

They called to tell me I qualified for a medical alert pendant but as soon as I mentioned I was healthy and active, they just hung up. Seems like they were fishing for info about my age and health details. Pretty dodgy if you ask me.

From the noticeable pause after I picked up the phone, it seems quite likely that they are employing an automated dialling system which only links through to a representative once the call has been accepted. The chap on the other end had a distinct southern English twang and displayed a rather courteous telephone etiquette. He identified himself as being from the Medical Alert Centre and went on to suggest that I might qualify for a complimentary alert pendant. He almost got to the point of inquiring if I was over fifty when I decided to cut the conversation short, informing him that I wouldn’t be participating in his questions and promptly ended the call.

So this bloke said he was from Medical Alert, but it was pretty obvious he was just reading off some script and couldn’t really answer anything when I asked. They tried to get me by offering a free medical ID bracelet. If you’re not careful and feeling a bit vulnerable, I reckon they’d fool you easily. Seems like a total scam to me!

Given the significant pause from the moment I picked up the phone to when the caller actually spoke, it’s quite likely they’re employing an auto-dialler that links through to an agent only once the call has been picked up. The chap on the other end had a distinctive southern English accent and was rather polite. He introduced himself as being from the Medical Alert Centre and mentioned I might qualify for a complimentary alert pendant. Just as he was inquiring if I was over 50, I politely declined to respond to his queries and ended the conversation.

BEWARE OF SCAMS! If you get dodgy calls or texts, make sure you report them straight to the police's fraud system. Just search for ‘action fraud’ and head over to the ‘police.uk’ website. Find the section about ‘reporting phishing’ and carefully read all the info provided. Then submit the details of the scam, including any websites or links if you have them. You don’t need to sign up or give personal info, unless you’ve lost cash and are making a formal complaint. Reporting all these dodgy attempts is the only way for the police to track and fight these scams.
