Got a ring from this number twice today. First time, it was some bloke with an accent saying his name was James and that he was calling from the Telephone Preference Service. Got calls from the same number loads yesterday and already a few today. The person said they were from the Telephone Preference Service management team. They claimed I paid by direct debit and my credit card had run out, so they needed the new expiry date. I told them I’d checked online and TPS is a free service that never makes unsolicited calls. She kept insisting I was wrong and said the expiry date was some kind of access code. I refused to give it out and said goodbye, but she kept bleating that I didn’t get it as I hung up.

They said they’d call back at 12:30 and asked me to have my Visa ready. It was such a daft and obvious scam, hardly threatening, but I can see how people might fall for it if they’re not on their guard.
