This morning I got a call from a recorded voice telling me there’s some case against me for not paying my taxes or something along those lines. They said if I don’t want to face serious trouble, even jail time, I should hit 1. I was driving so I stopped the car and pressed 1. Then a woman’s voice came on asking for my personal info. I didn't give her anything and told her I was behind the wheel, which was true. Asked if I could ring them back on a number, but she just said she’d call later and then they hung up. Once I got back home, I checked the HMRC website and everything seemed fine. No outstanding problems at all. Even looked through my emails and found no messages from HMRC besides the usual tax reminders and confirmations, so I figured they’d have said something by now if there was an issue. Plus, the website clearly says HMRC won’t call out of the blue, and if they do contact, it’s always with a reference number they won’t ask you to provide. Has anyone else had calls like this?
