Someone rang me claiming to be from a medical alert system company, explaining a device meant to improve home safety - something I was actually curious about. I decided to try their free trial. Afterwards, I looked up the company on 08002465520 and began to get suspicious. The number that they used to call me was 01208227250. I sent them an email asking to cancel the order, but today I got another call from 01202375557. Every number I’ve checked came back with bad reviews.

I kept getting calls from a hidden number at first, all about pendant alarms for old people. They never had any clue who I was or where I lived, and then they started asking for my bank info. I gave them a fake account number, and still they didn’t even try to find out my real name. Then a call came from 0800 246 5520, where I gave the name Pullin Yapecka; they didn’t even notice it was made up. I stuck around on loads of calls just to waste their time. The last call was from a Bournemouth landline, number 01202375557 - a polite young woman who seemed a bit lost. She ended up threatening me with fines and debt collectors, so I slowly had to explain my real name. In the end, she complained that I’d ruined the reputation of a company that supposedly helps elderly people by wasting her time. I reckon these scammers probably convince themselves they’re not scammers, but it’s still against the law in the UK to call from a withheld number like they first did, so that’s pretty sneaky. When I asked where they got my number from, all they said was they’d purchased it from a database - no real details there.
