I'm pretty convinced this was a dodgy call. They phoned earlier but just let the phone ring until it went to voicemail, and didn’t bother leaving any message.

Totally with you on that. They hung up right before the answerphone kicked in, so clearly they knew nobody was gonna pick up. You can guess what that means.
