Some bloke called saying he was from Crisis at Christmas and seemed to know I’d worked shifts there this year. He went on about all the stuff they offer, and I mentioned my charity does similar things. Then he just hung up on me.

I got a call from this number and a voicemail said it was from Ethicall, a company that raises money on behalf of others. They gave an email to contact if you want to be taken off their calling list. I had once set up a direct debit for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, but cancelled it ages ago. This call was basically to ask if I’d like to start donating again. They knew my full name and address, which felt a bit strange, especially as they rang me at 8.30pm. I wasn’t about to hand over bank details to some unknown company. I’ve messaged Battersea Dogs and Cats Home today to check if Ethicall is legit. The number starts with 0117, so it’s a Bristol line. If they turn out to be legit, fair enough, but calling so late really put me off.

They rang me twice, missed the first call though. Sounds like it’s from Bristol. Weirdly, only my landline got the calls. I sorted it by having my granddaughter blow her whistle into the phone - that really put them off. Apparently from a call centre working for a charity, but it’s pretty creepy how they’ve got your info, including your birth date and all. Just to be clear, I’ve never done any surveys with them. Now I’m just letting it go straight to voicemail with my granddaughter’s whistle playing in the background.

I rang Battersea to find out if they’d shared my info, and while they said they hadn’t sold my details, they admitted they do pass them on to other charities. Seems like a sneaky way to drum up more donations. I’m not happy with this at all, so I’m planning to stop my direct debit with them. Instead, I’ve started giving to the East Anglian Air Ambulance, who actually promised me in writing that they won’t share my info with anyone else. Much happier with that, to be honest.
