I got a robo call from someone claiming to be HMRC, saying if I don’t respond I’ll be arrested. It’s obviously another scam. Seriously, why aren’t the police doing something about these fraudsters?

This afternoon I received a call warning me I'd be arrested if I didn’t sort my taxes. Thing is, I’ve been retired for three years now. I only pay about 20p in tax each month from my pension, so it seemed a bit ridiculous! Haha.

Loads of reasons show this is definitely a scam, but the big giveaway is that if HMRC were to make calls like this, they’d be breaking the law around money laundering. It’s actually against the rules to warn someone about potential charges beforehand, because that would let them dodge arrest by vanishing. No official agency sends out a warning before charges or arrests happen - they’ll just show up at your door with the police.
