Someone pretending to be from PayPal called me. As soon as I called him out for being a scammer, he started threatening me, saying he knew my address and would mess me up. Proper scary stuff.

Just like loads of others have said, they said they were calling from our electricity company and mentioned some problem with the postcode or something. I cut them off and they rang me straight back. I told them I wasn’t buying their story and ended the call again. Then they phoned again, this time chatting to someone else at work, saying they were energy brokers. Proper shady. Best to just hang up on them every time, they’ll get the hint eventually.

Got a call from someone pretending to be from our energy company, saying there had been a mix-up with the meter readings between our account and another firm nearby. When I told them the other business's postcode was different from ours, they just ended the call straight away. Definitely just a scam.

Got a call from a guy called Anuj, spoke with a strong Indian accent, claiming to be from United Gas & Power. He said there’d been a mistake with the postcode and meter reading and asked for the meter number, address, names on account and when my contract ends. I asked him a few things to check and his answers were spot on. Seems like they’re fishing for info. I reckon either the energy firms are passing details along or these people got hold of it some other way. Stay cautious and don’t give out personal info.

Just like many others, I got a call from someone claiming to be with E-ON. At first, I ended the call right away, but then he rang straight back. He tried to say there’d been some confusion over postcodes. When I mentioned I felt the call was a bit dodgy, he insisted I should believe him because he’d shared plenty of info. In the end, I just cut the call and blocked the number.

Got a call at work from someone named Lucy, said she was with British Gas. She kept saying her name and the company name over and over, which seemed fishy straight away. Claimed to be from the billing department. Her English name but obvious foreign accent threw me off, and she even rang twice after I told her I couldn't assist since I handle exports, not accounts 😂 If you want coffee shipped to Calcutta, I'm your person, but meter readings? Nope, not my thing. Definitely a scam, best just to ignore these calls.

He claimed to represent either Eon or British Gas - you name the provider, and he’d say that was him. Curiosity got the better of me, so I inquired about his location, and he mentioned Chelmsford. Absolute charlatan, if you ask me! The number’s registered in Bristol, yet he was fishing for my gas meter details, even though we don’t even use gas!

Got a call from someone claiming to be with Scottish Power. They said they’d taken a meter reading but the postcode they had was wrong, and that my usage was a whopping 17000kwh. I told them to ring back later - when they did, they wanted me to confirm some info, but I asked them to send an email instead. Then they got a bit rude when I mentioned they should already have all my details. I just hung up. Feels dodgy, especially since they seem to know so much. I’m guessing there’s been some kind of leak with the energy company's data!

Just a heads up, I wouldn’t trust this number.

They even knew I pay by direct debit and when my contract ends, which made it sound legit. But when I asked why they didn’t know my meter number, they got all pushy. I told them I’d check my documents and call back. The whole thing felt really dodgy, so I rang ScottishPower straight away on their official 0800 number. They confirmed no one from their side had contacted me today and my account’s actually in credit. Definitely a scam, so watch out for this.

I got a weird feeling about it, so I told them I wasn’t comfortable sharing more info and that I’d ring up my actual supplier myself to check if this was for real. Legit EON only ring if there’s a customer issue or if you’ve called them before and are expecting a callback. We told our EON contact about the number and they’ve also reported it. We’ve gone ahead and informed trading standards too - the more people who report it, the better. If you get a call from 01173182117, just hang up and block it!

Got a call about accounts payable, and when I asked for the caller's company, she said something about British Gas - EON and our energy bill. From the stuff they asked, I think they're some sort of middleman trying to find customers who aren’t tied into contracts or whose deals are about to finish. They even mentioned my current deal ending next week but didn’t know I’d already renewed for another three years, then they seemed to lose interest once that came up.
