Then I contacted PPL/PRS directly and they had no idea who these people were. This is a scam, don’t share any info with them. They’re trying to frighten folks into purchasing a licence they don’t supply, as they’re not connected to PPL/PRS at all. Never hand over your bank details to them.

Cold Caller - Really blunt and pushy, keeps demanding to speak with just the owner and never clearly says who they are or why they’re calling. Since I usually answer, I just refuse to talk to them unless they’re polite. Some bloke called me up five times, talking to a retired copper who told him to put things in writing. But he just kept ringing back every few minutes. There’s loads of royalty free music around, even plenty of websites for it. Sure, a music licence is fine when it’s actually needed, but not otherwise. We’d happily welcome a polite visitor, but we’re not paying some aggressive tosser who’s badgering our mates. The government really should clamp down on these pushy and unfair folks. Some bloke called Jordan, supposedly from PPL PRS - so what’s the actual company name then? Apparently it’s "Ventrica". This number doesn’t show up anywhere except on those “who called me” sites. Sounds dodgy, and after reading some of the comments, they seem pretty pushy with their calls. I’d only chat with the owner, who quickly told them to sling their hook - small business here, no radio or TV around. One thing for these call centres: if you’ve got the business name, owner’s name, and phone number, surely you must have the house number and postcode too?

This number is genuine. Whenever you play music in public places like schools, pubs or workout sessions, you need a licence by law. I recently started running exercise classes in a village hall and had to get one because it’s the legal thing to do, and you can get fined if you don’t. I’m with you on how awful the phone team is - their customer service is shockingly bad and needs serious improvement. But they’d only have your phone number if you gave it to them when you asked about the licence or signed up for their calls beforehand.

I explained we didn’t need one since no music is played here, but he insisted he could hear music in the background. I pointed out it was actually the bin men and the rubbish lorry making noise. He tried to be smart and kept claiming it was music, but I told him again there’s no music playing. He said he’d ring back. If this was meant to be a PRS query, it was done terribly. The caller was really rude and bossy, flat out saying that calls are recorded due to legal reasons and throwing in loads of other legal stuff. Feels like they’ve read off some nonsense without thinking. When I told them we don’t have any music services, they oddly asked for our address to remove us from the list? Are they just dialing random numbers then? Surely if they knew who they were calling, they’d already have that info. Just another classic case of daftness in the UK.

I spoke with a young lady who was quite pushy and insistent. I explained that holiday cottages are 'licenses to occupy' and don’t involve public performances, but she wouldn’t take any notice and kept pushing her point. She claimed that watching TV in a holiday cottage counts, which would make it a private performance. I’m quite worried if PPL PRS Ltd is going after holiday rentals now. I’m fully behind PPL PRS as my son is a songwriter signed with Warner Atlantic, and I’m also chair of a local community hall covered by PPL PRS.

Spoke to a young woman who sounded rather rude and insisted it was legal for her to ring me. She then began grilling me about recorded music but when I asked for any legal backing, she couldn’t provide any. When I said I didn’t want the call recorded, she mentioned it could be recorded anyway, and I told her I didn’t agree to that. I said we used to run a puppet theatre but shut it down 3 years back, mainly due to licensing fees. Even if they have the right to do this, the way they spoke to me seemed almost like harassment.

At first I was a bit doubtful since it was new to me, but I ran it by my solicitor and it all seemed legit. Turns out they’re allowed to call as they’re not a sales outfit but a licensing authority here in the UK. Seriously, mate, I reckon you're the one missing the point here. If you've got any kit that plays copyrighted stuff, you're legally supposed to sort the fees. Leaving it hanging can cost you big time because they can backcharge you for up to six years of usage, which is no small change! I think PPL PRS has been going for more than a century, they started out as the Performing Right Society if I'm not mistaken. I don’t deal with them now as I sold my business a while back, but me and my mates used to have the radio on all day when we were fixing cars, which was great. My lad plays in a band and actually gets paid through PPL PRS, which I reckon is brilliant, considering how tough it is for artists these days.

So, this company who deals with music licences rang me up, saying they cover businesses that play music. I work in a small solicitor’s firm with just me and my assistant, so obviously we don't have any music on. They have to call everyone anyway, no matter what kind of company you run. After a short chat explaining our situation, they updated their records to show we don’t use music. I’m not in need of a licence, but if a place does play music, they defo have to get one - thought that's just basic info really.

That number is from PRS, they’re basically after you to cough up for a radio listening licence. It’s dodgy, but they’re playing by the rules. When they ring, say your phone’s being handed over to you personally and you’re somewhere else. If they catch any tunes playing (they probably record you), just say you’re not at work right now.

PPL PRS Ltd had a bloke who just wouldn’t quit. He kept going on about us needing a Music License for some Government Dept, even though we don’t play any music here. I rang their number back and could leave a voicemail. When I asked to speak to Procurement or Accounts, they just gave me some generic email for enquiries, so I’m guessing they’re not too bothered since we probably have all our paperwork sorted. Honestly, don’t let them pressure you - if they won’t listen when you say no, just hang up.

So I got a call about buying a license for stuff we do on site - sounded a bit off. Honestly, it’s always worth double checking who’s behind the number and where they’re actually calling from, could easily be the cops or something.
